Blue Bloods by Melissa De La Cruz

I received this from the publisher this weekend. I read it super fast: 2 days! :)

I'm going to switch it up with this review! :)

Blue Bloods (Blue Bloods, Book 1) by Melissa De La Cruz

Summary (Melissa's Website)

Within New York City’s most elite families, there lurks Blue Bloodsa secret society of celebrated Americans whose ancestors sailed on the Mayflower. They are the powerful and the wealthy—and in fact, they are not human. They are the Blue Bloods, an ancient group of vampires.

Schuyler Van Alen has never fit in at Duchesne, her prestigious New York City private school. She prefers baggy, vintage clothes instead of the Prada and pearls worn by her classmates, and she lives with her reclusive grandmother in a dilapidated mansion. Schuyler is a loner—and happy that way.

But when she turns fifteen, Schuyler’s life changes dramatically. She has a mosaic of blue veins on her arms, and craves raw meat. The death of a popular girl from Duchesne is surrounded by a mystery that haunts her. And strangest off all, Jack Force, the most popular boy in school, is showing a sudden interest in her.

Schuyler wants to find out the secrets the Blue Bloods are keeping. But is she herself in danger?

Steeped in vampire lore and set against the glittery backdrop of New York City, Blue Bloods will be devoured by fans of Melissa de la Cruz.

  • Schuyler Van Alen is very likable. She's cute, smart, and not naive. She is blossoming and I'm looking forward to seeing her grow.
  • Oliver, Schuyler's best friend, is a cutie!
  • Vampires! Yup, the Blue Bloods are vampires. Truly unique vampires too.
  • History element. I love the references to history. It makes it very believable.
  • Mystery. Something's not right about how one of the students dies.
  • Scanned documents. There are clippings from the journal of a Blue Blood throughout the book, which makes them look like they are scanned pages. I thought that was a very cool effect. The font of the book, at least the first letter of each new chapter  was also interesting. It is written like it is fresh ink. Neat.

  • Way too much fashion jargon. I really didn't care what brand of clothing they were wearing. Goodness gracious but does she tell us! I've been warned that this does stop, so I'm looking forward to more substance in the plot and other details than what the characters are wearing.
  • There's no conclusion, hence the sequel, but I found it disappointing that we don't find out exactly who's responsible for the death.
  • Mimi. I hate dislike her immensely. She's super annoying and such a bitch to everyone, including her likable twin brother Jack, who is hot and interesting.
  • NYC. I don't know my way around NYC but this author sure does. She references turns and addresses but they meant nothing to me. It would have been nice if there was a map of the area she references in the front of this book. Or in the back.

I enjoyed it. I'm giving the series hope because this was the first of a series and it really needed that first book to get things rolling. Yah know?

I've already started the second book, Masquerade, and looking forward to what Schuyler and Oliver find out about her heritage.

  1. Nice review. I'll probably enjoy the NYC references.

  2. This one left me kind of on the fence. I completely agree with you on the clothes/NY references. And I'm cool with cliffhanger endings, but give me something. I ended up not reading the rest of the series. I'll be interested to know what you think of the next book.

  3. I like the whole Pros and Cons thing! Amazing. I too enjoyed this one very much. My boyfriend bought me The Van Alen Legacy the other day and Im dying to read it!!!!!!

  4. I totally love that you did the Pros and Cons! That is a brillant idea! And I bought this book last week, so I am hoping to read it as soon as I can! Nice job!! :)

  5. Great review- I wasn't really "hooked" after the first one, but once I got into Book 2, that was it- I was addicted! I think they get better and better as you progress in the series. Van Alen really rocked my world. Can't wait to hear what you think! :)

  6. I did enjoy this book although it was very reminiscent of Gossip Girl just there are vampires in this one haha. I agree about your point mentioning the detailing of clothes. It was a bit much at times. I still want to read on though so that's a good thing. ;D

  7. This series just got better and better to me. The latest book was especially good and you will be amazed to see how Mimi is portrayed.

  8. I've been curious about this series but not enough to part with my money for it. Thanks, I'll at least read the first one now thanks to your review.
