Short Review: Dear John by Nicholas Sparks

I have a large stack of books awaiting my attention for reviews. I’ve decided that since a lot of them are older books that a quick remark of my thoughts would suffice how I felt about them.

Dear John by Nicholas Sparks

"Dear John", the letter read. And with those two words, a heart was broken and two lives changed forever.
When Savannah Lynn Curtis comes into his life, John Tyree knows he is ready to turn over a new leaf. An angry rebel, he had enlisted in the army after high school, not knowing what else to do. Then, during a furlough, he meets Savannah, the girl of his dreams. The attraction is mutual and quickly grows into the kind of love that leaves Savannah vowing to wait for John while he finishes his tour of duty. John must choose between love and country. Now, when he finally returns to North Carolina, John will discover how love can transform us in ways we never could have imagined.

My Grade: 4/5

I loved the movie trailer so much that I decided to read this before seeing it. I loved the movie The Notebook, which was also a book written by Nicholas Sparks but I’d never read anything by him.

I did NOT love Dear John. I hated the ending. I will not see this movie now. The rest of the book was an incredibly awesome, heart wrenching, love story superbly written. Again, the ending ruined this book for me.

P.S. – I loved John. That is all.

  2. I read this book in Febraury (you can check out my review here. I actually really enjoyed the book. However, I felt like it was a bit deceiving. I loved aspects of the book that I'm not sure I was suppose to. John's relationship with his father was my favorite part and felt like it eventually over took John & Savannah's relationship.

I've heard mixed things about the movie. Apparently the ending is different then the book and apparently happier. Others haven't loved the movie. I'll probably still go see though, I like comparing books vs. movies.

  3. Great review. I'm afraid I will have the same issues with the book.
