Summary (Amazon.com)

When Kaylee Cavanaugh screams, someone dies.

So when teen pop star Eden croaks onstage and Kaylee doesn't wail, she knows something is dead wrong. She can't cry for someone who has no soul.

The last thing Kaylee needs right now is to be skipping school, breaking her dad's ironclad curfew and putting her too-hot-to-be-real boyfriend's loyalty to the test. But starry-eyed teens are trading their souls: a flickering lifetime of fame and fortune in exchange for eternity in the Netherworld—a consequence they can't possibly understand.

Kaylee can't let that happen, even if trying to save their souls means putting her own at risk….

Plot

I wasn’t a fan of the plot in this addition to Rachel’s Soul Screamers series. I liked that we saw more of Tod but I was not a fan of the two new characters.

The plot advanced well and was written just fine but the installment just went somewhere I wasn’t expecting. Teen singers selling their souls to demons? I think it’s a great topic for teeny bopper teens but I just wasn’t thrilled enough by it.

Setting

As always Rachel excels at setting an awesome scene. I love when Kaylee, Tod, and Nash cross over to the “other world”. That place was just awesome! Want more!

Writing

I’m a HUGE Rachel Vincent fan. She doesn’t disappoint with her writing style in this installment. I just wasn’t a fan of the overall theme of this one.

There’s a scene written about lasagna that had me splitting seams! It was hilarious! :)

Originality

Soul Screamers. Enough said. :)

The plot was original but again, I wasn’t a huge fan of the teeny bopper soul selling singers. I had higher hopes for Kaylee and Nash. I want them to do something a bit more exciting. I want them to be as action packed as Faythe and Marc in the Shifter series minus the gore that they always seem to find themselves in.

Characters

Addison Page and her sister Reagan are the new characters we meet. Addison has sold her soul via a contract to a music label. Kaylee and Nash put themselves out to help because Addy is Tod’s exgirlfriend, whom he hasn’t gotten over, but he’s not “alive” therefore, unavailable.

I wasn’t a fan of these two new characters. They came with the plot, which you’ve figured out I wasn’t a fan of. They were selfish and spoiled. I didn’t like them as people. I couldn’t relate to them either. Yes, I’ve wanted something so bad before, but not to the point that I’d sell my freaking soul to get it.

Tod is very vulnerable too. He shows us how alive he still is. I really missed his smart ass comments because he was too worried about Addy.

Passion

Kaylee and Nash are getting steamy! Their relationship is progressing nicely. I totally thought we were going to hit a home run but maybe in the next book. :) Here’s a snippet of Kaylee’s thoughts about Nash.

Nash was just delicious, in a completely unsatisfying way. Unsatisfying, because no matter how closely I pressed myself against him, I always wanted more.

-pg. 193, My Soul To Save (ARC edition) by Rachel Vincent

Overall

I love Rachel. I will continue to read anything the woman writes. I’m just hoping we get more action from the next installment of the Soul Screamers series.

Cover/Title Bonus

My ARC has the original cover, which matches the cover to My Soul to Take but Harlequin Teen changed it to zoom in on Kaylee’s face, which I am NOT a fan of.

  1. I recently read the first book and while I love Rachel's writing style, the story was ok for me. It would have been better for me if I understood the purpose of a soul screamer. It seemed to me that Kaylee has this ability to know when someone is about to die but isn't supposed to do anything about it or change anything...so, what's her use? Did I miss something somewhere? Will reading My Soul to Lose clear things up for me as I've only read the first book? I'll read the second book eventually as I can't seem to not buy anything Rachel puts out! LOL

  2. I love how you organize your reviews!

I haven't read the first one, but I'm not quite sure if I will. I keep seeing so-and-so reviews of both books.

    Thanks for the review :)

  4. I agree with you - I LOVED the old cover hate the new one. Was hoping to get an ARC but I've missed like two chances to trade for one, oh well.

  5. I agree I have the new cover and was not happy with the change and let harlequin know it. Not like I have any sway with them. But all there new covers and re-issues are looking the same. It angers me. This new cover zooms in on Kaylee's armpit and cuts off her face...why? And the weird shadow at first look makes me go "ewl Kaylee girl, you need to shave." But then I see its just a weird shadow. Its petty but still its my opinion. Rachel Vincent is one of my favs so so far she and her writing are golden.

  6. I'm glad I'm not the only one not a fan of the new cover. I'm not sure why they zoomed in on her armpit. It just doesn't make any sense.

  7. Ya I hate the armpit! I've held off on buying it cause I'm going to Strand soon and maybe they will have an ARC.
